2009 was closed by the power plant with the best results ever of its history. The electricity production of Paks Nuclear Power Plant was as high as 15,427 GWh last year. 2009 is considered remarkable with regard to capacity upgrading as well, since Unit 3 has achieved 108% of its initial design power on 13 November, thus the total output of the four units hits 2000 MW.

In June 2009, the Nuclear Safety Directorate of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Agency issued its decision regarding our Service Life Extension Program, in which they stated that they saw possibility for complying with the conditions specified by them and thus for the implementation of the Service Life Extension Program.

It is considered a remarkable success of the last year that the Hungarian Parliament granted its approval, with a majority of 95.4%, for the start of preparations for the construction of new nuclear unit(s) on the site of Paks Nuclear Power Plant.

Paks Nuclear Power Plant continues to be a dominant and the most economical production unit of the electric supply system of Hungary: Its revenue from the sale of 1 kWh electric power is HUF 10.67. The turnover during the last year was HUF 154.1 billion.

The contribution of PA Zrt to the domestic electricity production is 43%, which is nearly 6% higher than that achieved in 2008. The percentage ratio of nuclear energy to the total electric energy used in Hungary is 37.3%

Safe operation continues to be a primary factor, and is guaranteed by the proficiency of our professionals and the well-organised work carried out by them. The safe and effective operation of the units is a precondition for the service life extension and for the construction of new units.

Similarly to the previous years, undiminished public confidence is demonstrated by the results of public opinion polls; more than one-third (77%) of the Hungarian population accept that a nuclear power plant is operated in Hungary.
